Welcome to 2010

So we have finally arrived, we are in the promised land led here by Moses Jordaan, yes it’s 2010 and the next stop is bucketfuls of milk and honey, viva Las FIFA!

Oh yes, I have already let my house out for R1m a week and someone has hired my Citi Golf at R10,000 a day, apparently Hertz and Avis will have nothing to hire out as they have block bookings from North and South Korea!

Penny Wise Pound Foolish

Have you ever considered how the terms, “Penny wise pound foolish” and “Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves” fly in the face of each other?

Two established and oft used phrases that we all seem to accept, but which fundamentally give us completely different advice!

Financial Maturity

Apparently in 2011 Argentina will join South Africa, New Zealand and Australia to create the Southern Hemisphere’â Four Nations Rugby Tournament. I think that is really great as personally the Tri Nations is getting a little boring, the guys in the Northern Hemisphere introduced Italy to their annual drinking fest and it became the far better Six Nations a few years back.

Variety is the spice of life and sport, and without Italy, South Africa’s recent trip would have been known as the Grand Slammed Tour, Italy was our only decent result! How things can change so quickly in sport, one day scoring 350 against England and two days later collapsing all out for 120!  Goodness if this South African trend continues Bafana Bafana may win something!

Tears of Separation

The tears, oh those terrible tears and tantrums of separation! What a hole it leaves in peoples lives and that black hole of despair is most noticeably felt at the bank!

Yes, whether its goodbye hubby, employee, company or financial advisor, there is all too often a price to pay and often the damage is exacerbated by the innocent party insisting on fighting the good fight, with the misguided belief that a good clean scuffle will ensue seeing the innocents emerge exonerated and better off.

Financial Maturity

As this year draws to an end it’s amazing to think that there are only 36 days until 2010, the year that SA has been awaiting for what appears to be decades!

This year has flown, did we actually have Easter this year or did we forget it totally? What happened to November, it just evaporated? I know I am getting older as my rather annoying better half tells me about twice a week, annoying as she looks and grows younger and lovelier by the year, I just slowly decay! I swear there are bits of me that might actually fall off, but then that’s another story altogether.

Get a reference

It never ceases to amaze me that people will go to great lengths to check out all the options on a new TV or car. They will insist on checking out a holiday destination before even booking a week’s break, but when it comes to people or things that have a major impact on their lives, their company or reputation they don’t even take up one reference.

A certain individual known to me and my friends was recently fired by a well known listed retailer, actually the person in question was allegedly, according to senior management, Frog Marched out of the head office for activities that were, shall we be generous and say, irregular.

Make a Plan

The majority of life is about making a plan and also planning. We are constantly adapting our lives and circumstances so that they accommodate our current position and environment. At the same time that never stops us making a plan for the future or rather planning that the future is as we want it to be.

In brief I suppose that is what separates man from beast, while both need to adapt and “make a plan” quickly as external forces affect us, only man can be said to know how to plan his future circumstances with any great degree of conscious knowledge.

Financial Maturity

Do you, like me, page through the Weekend Argus Property Sections and dream of buying those Chairman’s Choice super homes? Well if you do then you may have noticed that a strange thing has seemingly occurred.  Strange in that South Africa’s property experts tell us property has fallen, at the very most 15%, yet no one seems to have explained this to the sellers.  No there they are selling one and two acre prize Constantia properties for R4 –  R5 million.  Odd indeed when little over a year ago these babies were being pushed along at R8 – R12 million, were they not?

Seriously though, this segment of the market appears to be in free fall, with many sellers seemingly begging for any offer at all.  This has to be, for the person lucky enough to be hunting in this price bracket, the opportunity of the century (albeit only 9 years old!).

Ground Hog Day

It’s been a funny sort of few days and I have felt a little like Bill Murray in Ground Hog Day. The fact that there were so many family birthdays, a son, a father and a dog and so many parties, cakes and drinkies all confused the issue still further for me.

Public Holidays mid week always blow my mind, especially the recent Youth Day, on a Tuesday for some reason, I spent the next day convinced it was Monday!

Good Years

Once in every life time you get the opportunity to amass experience in bucket fulls and within a very short period of time, this is one of those times!

There are 30 year olds in the financial services industry today who having left university have spent their entire working life in the investment world and have never seen anything other than a protracted bull run.
