The Art of Courage

“Doing what you say gets you what you want.”

This deceptively simple motto is the guiding philosophy of an inspiring man I know named Simon Ekin.

One evening in South London, feeling inspired by a personal development course, Simon hopped onto a crowded bus and confronted his fear of public speaking. He stood up and delivered a spur-of-the-moment speech to his fellow passengers. Broaching the topic of Nelson Mandela, he pointed out that this great man was a human being just like everyone else on the bus, yet he was not willing to give up on his vision of freedom.

“What would happen if we all took action in our own lives, in whatever small way, to cause the changes that we dream about?” Simon asked.

His accidental audience was incredulous at first, but soon began to respond positively to Simon’s message. When he exited that bus, he received high-fives and pats on the back instead of the judgement and rejection that he had initially feared.

Since that day, Simon – a former British Army Officer – has spoken to over 7 000 strangers in buses, planes, trains and other public places. He has well and truly conquered his fear of public speaking. In the process, he has also made a name and career for himself as a motivational speaker and ‘Teacher of Courage’.

Simon has been in to speak to the Warwick Wealth team on several occasions and I’m always touched by his frankness and determination. He’s a regular guy who has transformed his fear into opportunity; and then turned his passion into profit. That takes a lot of courage!

If you would like to find out more about Simon and hear his story, visit his website or look out for his book, The Art of Courage, by Croker Publishing.
